So it Begins

Friends and Family,

Becoming a missionary has been a process, one that began when I first met Christ at the age of sixteen. As most of you know I have had an ever-growing heart for cross-cultural missions, specifically in Haiti. The extreme poverty and political unrest in Haiti has been on my heart for many years now, and I have had four opportunities to visit the place I will soon call home.
My time here as a student-athlete at Wheaton College is quickly coming to an end as May 2009 marks the end of my senior year. Both the academic experience and my time on the football team have greatly defined my life and shaped who I am in Christ. I have had the privilege of studying under some of the greatest Christian minds in Wheaton’s challenging academic environment. Athletically, I have played football against rigorous competition alongside some of the Godliest men I will ever meet, many of whom are friends and mentors I will have for the rest of my life.

The lessons I am learning have both challenged and encouraged me to follow the call I feel God has placed on my heart. At Wheaton, God has revealed more about his character and his desire for my life through people. My coaches have taught me integrity and discipline. My roommates have showed me what Christ’s love really is and how to love others. My professors have taught me that the mind is an invaluable tool for conveying biblical truths to an unknowing world. I have witnessed servant leadership through my friends and family as they have sacrificed to support my passions. As all of these lessons are developing, I feel that I am ready and more than willing to give my life in every way to love the people of Haiti for Christ and His kingdom.
I will be leaving for Haiti with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission in June 2009 and, Lord-willing, I am planning on staying for five years. During this time, I am looking forward to partnering with some of the most amazing Christian men and women in the field. I am very excited to learn from the missionaries and join in God’s story in Haiti. I will be living in northwest Haiti in a city called Saint Louis Du Nord. My role in this partnership will consist of a couple different things. I will be responsible for the short-term groups that come to Haiti and for facilitating their experience and spiritual growth. I also want to help a local bakery get up and running, stimulating small-scale economic growth. I believe that we as Christians are called to help meet physical needs; if we are faithful to feed the hungry, God will do the work to open the door to meet spiritual needs. I am confident that the Lord will use me in a variety of other ways, and I will enter my post with an open heart to respond to the needs.
As I ask you for your support, I want to emphasize that you are not only supporting the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, but you are supporting me, and helping to carry me in this formational point in my life. If you are willing to partner with me there are numerous ways to do so. First and foremost is prayer and words of encouragement. I could not be where I am or who I am without the prayers and contributions of my friends and family – and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Another area where you can partner with me is through material and financial support. I need to raise $1000 dollars a month ($12,000/year) for expenses. The financial breakdown is $400 a month for room and board, $200 for health insurance, and $400 for ministries such as the bakery or discipleship programs, transportation, and personal suppliess. I pray that you would consider giving a onetime gift or committing to partner over the years, either monthly or yearly. On behalf of the mission, if your resources do not line up with my ministry goals, please let me know and we will find a place for them within the mission.

The third and final way that you can partner with me is by visiting the mission in Haiti, to witness the impact of your prayer and support. I would love to have you come and see how our active and living God is at work in Haiti. If you would like to be a part of my monthly email list, please send me your address. You can also check out the mission website for more information, www.NWHCM.org, or you can email me at Grant.roszkowiak@my.wheaton.edu if you have any questions.
